TEXTILE DESIGNER AND ILLUSTRATOR, KLAUS JURGEN SCHMIDT

Klaus Jurgen Schmidt’s first memories were fored mixing powder paints on his sister’s bedroom floor in 1985, Cape Town. The painting resembled the solar system though it is not know whether this was his intention. Throughou this youth these paintings and drawings were pusshed further toward their realities by self-tuition, eventually applied on interior walls, editorial illustration and ultimately textiles where today’s discarded notions are re-awakened in extreme compositions, repetitions and placements. As the simplistic births the surreal, personified herringbones become conversational chevrons, a hand painted floral is deformed by solarization, while ancestral graphics become immortalized in foil or knitted digital jacquard. Ancestry and tradition adopt a new purpose in the finished print.
